Pros And Cons of the Nexus One From Google

Category : Mobile

Since the we first heard about Google’s Nexus One “Super Phone” , everyone expects it to be next chapter in technology breakthrough. After all , it is Google we are talking about here.

Now that we know what Google and HTC have  double teamed again,  We can decide whether or not the Nexus One is worth your money or not!  I’ve come up with a list of Super  pros and four Super cons. Take a look and share your thoughts.

Pro: Voice Dictation while driving

Google and HTC are very excited to have solved the long problem of texting while driving.  With the Nexus One’s ability to accept voice dictation on any text field (web search, SMS, Twitter, Email) you can now easily drive and talk to your phone like a crazy person at the same time.  While the “Super Phones” technology isnt “Super”, it still works better that 95% of devices out there, including your girlfriend!  ooops!.  This Feature also happens to be the only major feature on the Nexus One.

Pro: Android 2.1 Interface Overhaul

The most significant change is also largely the looks of it. This phone runs Android 2.1, which adds several 3D interface features.  The Nexus One uses that powerful Snapdragon processors to pull off some pretty neat and clean tricks.

Pro: Carrier Choice

The Nexus One is available unlocked and at a reasonable price of $530. Though it’s selling at somewhere in the mid $100, on a two year contract rate only through T-Mobile, Verizon will jump on the bandwagon in the Spring of 2010.  Vodafon is on the list as well.  iphone will soon be a thing of the past.

The neat unlocked feature for everyone makes the phone an option for people who are already committed to a certain carrier. Basically, it’s always better for the consumer.  Thanks to nexus you have the freedom to carry your phone for one provider to another, which ultimately I think , it will force the carrier to provide better service and coverage.

Con: It’s Not a VoIP Data Phone Revolution

Rumors were circulating that the first Google-branded phone would forgo traditional cellular voice networks all together by making all phone calls over data networks. TheVoIP -only plan would have been a game changer, eliminating restrictions on minutes and giving you more freedom to make calls when and where you want. Sadly, that rumor turned out to be false. The Nexus One is the same as other handsets when it comes to making phone calls.  Maybe there will be a Nexus TWO!!

Con: No Qwerty Keyboard

Althought this is an awesome phone, it probably wont attract the “business” minded user, or the Super typer.  Having added a sliding keyboard would of been nice.  Maybe on the next release?

Con: The Music Player App Is Still Sub-Par

The Android music player application has never earned high marks from gadget nerds and reviewers. Sadly, it remains completely unchanged on the Nexus One. If you were hoping to jam in style, well… keep hoping.

I believe that Google is capable of doing more with their technology. This could be a ginny pig for their future releases. Personally I’m going to wait around a few months to see what else Google has in store.

Why Blackberry is Better than iPhone at Work

Category : Mobile

So for a while now.. actually a really long while I’ve been debating whether to stay with blackberry or move to the iphone.  Well after a few months of research and just playing with peoples iphone i came to this very simple and generalized conclusion.

I’ve talked to many of my friends at different organizations and they all call the blackberry as the “c++” of the company world.  For all those techies, out there you know what I mean. This denotes that the majority of organizations are using BlackBerry, with a smattering of other devices on the network such as the iPhone and the Pre.

There are plenty of reason why the Blackberry has been the standard for business.  Reliability and Security are only two of the many reasons.  I also believe that it meets three criteria.

  1. Meets the needs of the enterprise IT organizations
  2. Meet the needs of the enterprise user
  3. Easy to do business with

From an IT view, Blackberry provides some crucial features that the iPhone currently lacks:

  • Native VPN
  • Native Mobile Device Management
  • Tactile keyboard demanded by the speed typers
  • ALL DAY power!
  • Capable of running multiple apps
  • Reliable service delivery that most mobile users demand

In short, you can actually get work done with the Blackberry.

So why is everyone talking about iPhone in enterprise? As mentioned above, the C++ scenario is in some ways confusing mainstream media that the iPhone has a significant presence in enterprise. It’s true that these devices exist in enterprise, but these devices are often employee liable versus corporate liable.

A typical case involves a VP who decides he wants to try out the latest Droid phone and brings it to his IT department and says “get this working for me.” The Android software is new and unpolished, and it may not even support IT policies, but the VP has to have it nonetheless. Others in the company see the VP using this device and some want to try it out too. IT admins will either fight against these devices, let employees have them under employee liable conditions, or just give up and let the gadget lovers in the company bring whatever they want on to the network. This is where the iPhone sits in business, as a gadget that a few in the organization want, and IT isn’t elated about. I would be surprised if there is even 1 major organization that has rolled out iPhones across a network in the thousands of devices. BlackBerry has several of these clients.

While I appreciate the Apple design philosophy and the company’s ability to create a revolutionary platform, to date it lacks many of the features required by business. Personally, I would like to see Apple try a slider device, as having a keyboard would go a long way to making the device more functional.

So if you’re a “get it done” type of person.. i suggest the blackberry with your work life.

If you want to play with your apps all day and have an app to count how many brush strokes you got left for your teeth.. go with the iPhone.  :)
